Pilates Power

The Pilates Method was developed by Joseph Pilates, born in Germany who emigrated to the United States in the 1920s. Pilates settled in New York City, where with his wife Clara they set up their first studio. This studio attracted people from disciplines as varied as circus performers, athletes and gymnasts. It was the dance community, however, who truly recognized the value of Pilates work. Such leaders as George Balanchine and Martha Graham incorporated Pilates’ method into their teaching and training of dancers.

The Pilates method is organized to train the body and mind together for a more complete and integrated exercise experience. There are a number of principles which Pilates incorporated into his method for high quality training. Visual images are used to train the mind as well as the muscles. The muscles of the body create a frame of reference a so-called “Map for the body”. The Pilates work is structured around the ‘powerhouse’ of the body: the stomach hips, low back and buttocks. Pilates work contributes to good posture and alignment. The work is designed to train the deepest muscles in the body. The Pilates system of exercise is designed to educate your body and give it tools which are important to self care.

There are many benefits to using the Pilates Method. The most dramatic ones include: the development of every aspect of physical fitness; flexibility, coordination, strength, agility, speed and endurance. Body control is enhanced, as well as correct muscle activation. Balance is improved, as well as breathing, concentration and focus. Pilates also serves as excellent cross-training for athletes!
