Group Sessions
The group classes are called Awareness Through Movement®. In these sessions, the teacher, verbally leads the group through a sequence of movements in various positions that can include: sitting in a chair or lying on the floor.
Classes are typically 45-50 minutes. The lessons are designed to take a student through a sequence that is necessary to engage the neural-pathway in the brain. These lessons incorporate multiple learning methods to facilitate establishing new movement habits.
The lessons are often based on early developmental movements and functional activities such as reaching and turning. The lessons can range from simple to complex and from easy to difficult as required for movement re-education/improvement.
A key aspects of the Awareness Through Movement® class is to direct the student’s awareness inward to connect with the inter-connected patterns of movement. This attention leads to new awareness of how ‘the ankle bone is connected to the shin bone’, or how a simple stretch engages the small lower back all the way through the length of the spine to the neck muscles. By actively feeling the chain of movement via a small motion, the student develops a deeper body awareness, which can lead to better motion quality and control.
The movements are designed to be slow and easy, which provides for the students to guide their attention to ‘spots I did not know I have’ and expand the awareness of their body and its many functions. Muscles, joints, postural alignment, flexibility, and coordination are discovered in new ways, leading to new more eficient options for movement.
